Mark Teixeira Set For Season-Ending Wrist Surgery

Mark Teixeira has been dealing with a wrist injury all season long that stems from spring training. He’s now set for season-ending surgery after an MRI confirmed a tear of the tendon sheath in his right wrist on Wednesday.

The Yankees’ team doctors recommended the surgery, which is expected to come along with a four to five month recovery process. The 33-year-old has seen limited time on the field this season and he spoke about the disappointment during a press conference.

“It’s very tough, especially in a season where the team could probably use me,” Teixeira said during the press conference. “We’ve had some really, really good teams the last few years, and this year, we have a great team, and I would love to be a part of this team. I really would’ve loved to be part of hopefully what’s a playoff run, but when you realize that it’s not going to happen, it’s really difficult.”

The Yankees will now look to move on without Mark Teixeira as Lyle Overbay is expected to continue his role as the starting first baseman. In 15 games this season, “Tex” struggled in 53 at-bats with a .151 batting average, three home runs, and 12 RBIs.

His replacement before and after his return to the field has been Overbay, who hasn’t been much better for the “Bronx Bombers.” Overbay is sporting a .239 average with eight homers and 33 RBIs.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman recently had a few choice words for third baseman Alex Rodriguez, but he now has bigger things to worry about with the loss of Teixeira. Manager Joe Girardi will have to put together a lineup without the slugger and it definitely wasn’t a part of the plans.

“It’s definitely not what we wanted,” Girardi said, according to the team’s website. “We thought that the shot would get him through, but we decided that he needs surgery and we’re going to have to do without him.”

Do you think the Yankees will be able to regroup without Mark Teixeira in the lineup?
