‘Independence Day 2’ No Will Smith But Goldblum And Pullman Likely To Return

It was just the other day that director Roland Emmerich confirmed that leading star Will Smith would not be playing the lead in Independence Day 2. Some thought maybe this film would be a reboot. We now know that Emmerich has other plans for the Independence Day sequel.

Talking with Movies.com, the White House Down director spoke about his plans for the Independence Day 2 film. He revealed that he is bringing back a few key cast members for the sequel.

During his chat with Movies.com, Emmerich confirmed that Independence Day 2 was happening and also said that the film was slated for an appropriate release date of July 3, 2015. When pressed about who will return, Emmerich did confirm that both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are set to return.

We’re not sure what their roles will be, but at least we do know that we’ll see some familiar faces in Independence Day 2. In the film, Pullman played the Commander-in-Chief, which we don’t see happening this time around seeing as the first film was 17-years ago, although perhaps the film could continue where it left off?

As for Jeff Goldblum, who’s currently in talks to join Jurassic Park 4, he’s also set to star in Independence Day 2. Unfortunately, like Pullman’s case, we’re not too sure how he will enter into the mix. We may be too soon on this talk, but 2015 may be the year of the nerdy scientist, since Goldblum played scientists in both franchises.

As for Will Smith’s involvement, Smith wasn’t right for Independence Day 2 because, “He’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name.”

So far the word is out on who  will come in to replace Will Smith as the lead, but Emmerich is still hoping that Smith will at least pop up for a short cameo.
