Mandela At Death’s Door? Government Silent

Nelson Mandella’s health has taken a turn for the worst, and he is now said to be in “critical condition.”

The Former South African presidents health has deteriorated significantly over the weekend, and the 94-year-old may be in his last days.

The current South African President, Jacob Zuma, who visited Mandela on Sunday, said in a statement to the press:

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba (Mandela’s clan name )is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands.”

By all accounts, though, the South African government would not be drawn into any further questioning. In a news conference on Monday, President Zuma remained cagey when he was asked specifically about Mandela’s condition:

“We were there, we looked at him, saw him, and we had a discussion with the doctors and with his wife, and we left. Adding: “I am not a doctor.”

Conflicting statements from the government in South Africa have left it unclear as to the condition of the former President.

Multiple statements before Sunday suggested that Mandela was stable and that might in fact be returning home soon.

Nelson Mandela has been in and out of hospital for many years. His health issues date back to the time he served as a political prisoner during apartheid. At that time, he contracted a lung disease which has affected his health seriously to this day.

The African National Congress said on Sunday in reference to Mandela’s heath:

“The African National Congress joins the presidency in calling upon all of us to keep President Mandela, his family and his medical team in our thoughts and prayers during this trying time,” it said.

It remains to be seen what the exact truth is regarding Nelson Mandela’s health, and we wish him a speedy and full recovery. You can add to the well wishers in the comments section below.
