‘Independence Day 2’ Release Date Announced By Fox

Independence Day 2 has secured an official release date.

Roland Emmerich’s big-budget sequel is apparently up and running over at 20th Century Fox. The studio officially dropped a release date on the masses today (June 20).

According to Bleeding Cool, Independence Day 2 is set to hit theaters July 3, 2015. Anything can happen between now and then so be sure to pencil that day into your calendar.

It’s currently unclear if 20th Century Fox intends to use the titles previously announced by Emmerich. The director wanted to call the sequels ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two. The studio’s official announcement simply referred to the film as Independence Day 2.

Collider reports ID4 stars Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will return for the sequels. However, Will Smith isn’t expected to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller. The website also states the story will shift the focus to a new cast of younger characters. A cliffhanger will tie the films together.

Roland Emmerich has reportedly tapped White House Down scribe James Vanderbilt to rewrite the script for Independence Day 2. The duo’s recent action-packed collaboration, which also features the White House getting trashed, is headed to theaters in the US next week.

When Emmerich, producer Dean Devlin, and star Jeff Goldblum appeared at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival for a special screening of ID4 last month, the future of the project seemed uncertain. Devlin suggested it might take a miracle to get Fox to give Independence Day 2 the green light.

“Roland and I would really like to do one. We have some pretty darn good ideas on how to do one and, hopefully, that will all come together. A lot of things have to align. The planets have to piece together and if they do, it’ll happen,” the producer explained.

It would seem the stars have aligned. Fans will soon be able to see check out the sequel they weren’t sure they always wanted. I’m definitely curious to see how the filmmakers continue to the story.

What do you think about Independence Day 2? Do you plan to check out the first sequel when it hits theaters in 2015?
