Kellogg’s recalling 4 popular cereals due to off taste and smell

This is super cereal, people- Kellogg’s is recalling four of its biggest breakfast products.

Apple Jacks, Froot Loops, Honey Smacks and Corn Pops are all affected by the voluntary recall, which Kellogg’s says is “due to an uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package.” 28 million boxes are affected, and the company says on an informational site about the recall that “a few” consumers have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms after consuming the product, such as nausea and diarrhea.

The products involved are listed at length below, and have a best before date of March 26th, 2011 through June 22nd, 2011 with “KN” printed before the date. (If your Froot Loops, Honey Smacks, Corn Pops or Apple Jacks have a “KM” in front of the date, Kellogg’s says they’re safe to eat.) WebMD got some more information about the characteristics of the affected cereal:

“We have identified a substance in the package liners that can produce an uncharacteristic waxy-like off taste and smell,” spokeswoman J. Adaire Putnam tells WebMD in an email. “Consumers report a variety of tastes and smells, including those that are stale, metal, and soap-like.”
