3D software update coming to PlayStation 3 “shortly”

The official PlayStation Blog has revealed that the next PlayStation 3 firmware update will be available “shortly,” and will lay the foundations for 3D stereoscopic gaming on the console.

Firmware update 3.30 for PS3 will arrive before Sony’s new Bravia 3D TVs go on sale in June. These new sets will also come with three free 3D games: WipEout HD, Super Stardust HD, and PAIN. There’ll also be a 3D demo of the outstanding MotorStorm: Pacific Rift.

The 3D technology that features in these games will require active shutter glasses, with shutters that open and close to give the impression of 3D.

And yes, that’s about as much of this as I understand. If you’re interested to know more about 3D gaming on the PS3, Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry blog produced an excellent piece on the subject earlier this week – well worth a read.
