A Chicago woman who has been arrested 396 times has been ordered to get help at a mental health and substance abuse treatment program.
Fifty-one-year-old Shermain Miles, who has been arrested 396 times in the last 35 years, plead guilty on Monday to attacking a city alderman.
Judge Peggy Chiampas said: “All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK? But you’ve got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well.”
Miles apologized for her behavior and thanked the judge for sending her to a mental health facility.
Miles said: “I just want to thank you. I’m not that person.”
The Chicago Sun Times reports that Miles was released in prison in April of 2011 after serving three years for armed robbery. Since then, she has been arrested several more times and was taken back to the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln, Illinois in December. Her most recent arrest came last summer when she attacked Alderman James Cappleman.
The judge credited Miles for time served and order her to attend a mental health and substance abuse treatment program at the Lincoln prison.
A representative for Cappleman said that he was satisfied with the judge’s decision.
It is unclear how Miles’ participation in the treatment program will effect her release. As of now, the IDOC has Miles parole date listed as “to be determined.”
According to the Huffington Post, Miles’ first arrest came in 1978 when she broke into a car. Since then, she’s been arrested for drug possession, burglary, assault and public indecency. In 1988, she was arrested 25 times. She has been convicted on 73 occasions and has been imprisoned at least 10 times.
Shermain Miles has been arrested 396 times in her life and judge Peggy Chiampas is hoping that her time behind bars is finally coming to an end. Do you think Miles will hit the 400 mark? Will she be able to turn herself around after attending the substance abuse program?
