Draft Day Decision makers: San Francisco 49ers

I wish it was an easy task to sit here and say blah, blah, blah this guy is calling the shots for the San Francisco 49ers from their war room. However given the surprise resignation of General Manager Scot McCloughan, we don’t really know what is going within the 49er organization. Trent Baalke is the Director of Player Personnel and seems to be the most likely guy to step in and lead the team through the NFL Draft.

With that being said this move likely gives Head Coach Mike Singletary more power within the organization, and the players they will bring in, to make a run at the 2010 NFL playoffs. Given the sub par record this team had in the 2009 draft, there is a lot of work to do. It is impossible to say how the Niners will conduct this draft. There are far too many unknowns to make an accurate guess, but we have to assume that Samurai Mike will look for his kinds of players. Given this is only his third full year at the helm; we don’t really know what that means either.

Baalke’s background is as a scout. He led the scouting department of the Washington Redskins, before coming to the Niners as a regional scout. We have to assume that he is more then competent at evaluating talent. This all gets a lot murkier when we see that David McCloughan, Scot’s son, is the Director of College Scouting. His name still appears on the team’s official website, but one has to wonder how much weight his voice still has.
