Cher ‘The Voice’ Finale Appearance Announced

Cher on The Voice season finale on June 18? It’s an interesting choice for the NBC performance show.

On Monday, the network announced that Cher will sing “Woman’s World,” the single off her new album of the same name. It’s the first album of new material in 12 years for the 67-year-old. Her last album, Living Proof, was released in late 2011 in Europe and early 2012 in the United States.

Now I could be a witch with a b and point out that Cher is known primarily for her costume changes and not her voice. I’ve seen her perform, and she didn’t even bother to pretend that she wasn’t lip-synching. She was putting on a show, and we were all having a good time, but it wasn’t about the voice.

And everybody loves looking at the fashion icon, who built quite a bit of her fame on her appearance in the 1970s in those never-to-be-forgotten extravagant Bob Mackie costumes.

But the singer has had her share of health struggles over the years.

Cher has also had a surprising number of Farewell Tours.

In fact, The Los Angeles Times said that she hadn’t sung live on TV since her 2003 NBC special called…wait for it…”Cher: The Farewell Tour.” Her relentless — some would say interminable — Farewell tour from 2002 to 2004 entailed a mind-boggling 326 performances and became one of the highest-grossing tours in history.

CBS said that her last TV performance was on VH1 in 2002 for the Divas Las Vegas special. Either way, it’s been a long time.

Whether or not Cher can really sing, and I don’t think many people argue seriously that she can, the whole package complete with all the wacky and sentimental costumes always draws an audience.

I’m thinking I might just turn down the sound and check out what she’s wearing that night.
