New York High School Accepts Blame For Inappropriate Yearbook Captions

High school is tough. It becomes even tougher when you are labeled as the “Creepy smile kid” or “Isolation kid” in a yearbook. That is exactly what happened at a high school in Hoosic Valley, New York, and the school officials are very sorry about it.

Superintendent Amy Goodell said the mistake was not intentional. “The yearbook editor and staff are devastated. Apologies are being made.”

The members of the yearbook staff apparently did not take the time to identify everyone and just put in placeholder names. Corrections were never made and many were outraged and offended.

Parent Patty Hough could not believe something like this happened. “Those poor kids, you know, to open up a yearbook and to find how they were labeled,” she said.

Goodell said that the books are being held and amended. “The Yearbook adviser, staff, administration and board of education are very sorry that this occurred. Parents that have a student who was not referenced to correctly have been contacted. The parents and students affected by the error have been understanding.”

Senior Dean Anderson doesn’t know how a mistake like that happened. “There are a lot of yearbook editors and there are a lot of people that reviewed it,” he said.

Robert Horowitz, another senior, admitted that he would be upset if he was wrongly labeled in the yearbook. “I would be totally going against the school because it’s my senior year and I don’t want to be remembered as this or this,” he said.

Hoosic Valley alum Matt Woelfersheim, however, saw the humor in it all. “Obviously this was meant to be funny,” he said. “They are, after all, high school kids.”

Do you think the yearbook staff should be punished for the mistakes? Or do you believe everyone is just overreacting?
