Archie Comics Movie: Live Action Film Will Be Set In Riverdale

Archie, Jughead, Veronica and Betty are heading to the silver screen. Warner Bros. announced today that it will soon be bringing Archie Comics to life.

Jon Goldwater, publisher and co-CEO of Archie Comics, said in the statement: “We are thrilled to be working with Warner Bros. on this project and have complete faith in their ability to bring Archie to the big screen in a way the fans will love.”

The live-action comedy will feature several Archie characters from the comics and will be set in a high school present-day Riverdale. According to Deadline, the new movie may also include zombies.

The storyline hasn’t been finished yet but Warner Bros. has already hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee) to pen the script. Aguirre-Sacasa is currently working on a new comic series, Afterlife With Archie, which focuses on Archie and his gang dealing with zombies in New York City. It’s hard to imagine that Warner Bros. would hire Aguirre-Sacasa to write the new movie if they weren’t interested in bringing the undead to Riverdale.

Archie has been around for more than 70 years but it still manages to make headlines. Last year, the comic caused a bit of a controversy when they introduced the first gay character to Riverdale.

Goldwater said: “Archie has remained extremely competitive enough to be a trend setter in contemporary comic books. We were the first to introduce a gay character into the storyline, and that was an incredible success. We’ve had different comics where Archie was married to Betty in one and Veronica in another. And the Archie Meets Glee was also a big success. But the core, the characters and Riverdale, remains part of the fabric of classic Americana.”

Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is set to direct the Archie movie.
