Judy Blume ‘Tiger Eyes’ Hits The Big Screen

Judy Blume’s movie Tiger Eyes is finally set to hit the big screen this weekend. The highly anticipated film adaptation is a first for the beloved author.

The story, written in 1981, follows the story of a girl named Davey. The young teen is tasked with adapting to a new life after the murder of her father and a cross country move. The film is a family project created by Blume, her husband George Cooper, and her son Lawrence.

As reported by Yahoo News, Blume and her son Lawrence worked together to develop the book into a screenplay. Lawrence also directed the film, while his father George served as executive producer. The film adaptation of Tiger Eyes cost the family close to $2 million to produce.

Blume published her first book The One in the Middle is a Green Kangaroo, in 1969. She continued writing, eventually publishing a total of 25 books. Blume’s first books appealed to adolescents, teens, and young adults. She later published three more books that were meant for older readers.

Judy Blume’s novels are known for addressing real, and sometimes uncomfortable, issues. Topics covered in her novels include menstruation, divorce, sexuality, racism, and masturbation. Blume’s novels have been banned from numerous school libraries, prompting her to advocate against censorship.

Blume openly admits censoring only one book before its release; Tiger Eyes. The original manuscript depicts masturbation scene, which Blume felt was too graphic for the intended audience.

The movie Tiger Eyes has been highly anticipated, as Blume’s books are loved by millions. As reported by Commercial Appeal, Blume has sold more than 82 million copies of her books. While some of her novels have inspired TV programs, Tiger Eyes is the first to hit the big screen.

The limited release Film will initially include 16 theaters nationwide. It will appear in more venues in the following weeks. Judy Blume fans can also find the film on iTunes, DirecTV, and On-Demand starting Friday.
