Penelope Cruz As Bond Girl May Not Happen, Says Source

Excited that Penelope Cruz is going to play the next Bond girl? You might not want to get your hopes up just yet.

News that the Volver star had signed on for the role took the internet by storm yesterday. Unfortunately for Cruz, she was immediately saddled with the “oldest Bond girl” title. Although she’s only 39 years old, that has to sting a little.

However, one source seems to think that Penelope Cruz’s role as the next Bond girl in James Bond 24 may not happen. An insider recently told the folks at E! Online that there was simply no truth to these rumors.

Keep in mind that this report comes from an anonymous individual and not from Cruz’s representative. While several news outlets have stated that her involvement is essentially a done deal, it would appear that fans will have to wait for an official statement from either Cruz or the film’s producer.

Despite the denial from this supposed insider, another source told Yahoo! that producers have been after Penelope Cruz for quite some time.

“The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time and they are working out the contract details now,” the insider explained.

MGM hopes to have the next James Bond adventure on the big screen by 2016. Filming is scheduled to begin next summer, so it’s not surprising that producers are starting to get a cast lined up for the project.

Another rumor making the rounds involves Skyfall director Sam Mendes. Although the filmmaker famously said he was done with the franchise due to emotional and physical exhaustion, it would appear that he’s considering a return to the series. There’s a possibility he could direct both James Bond 24 and James Bond 25.

Are you a fan of Penelope Cruz? Do you think the actress would make a good Bond girl?
