Ethan Hawke: ‘The More You Get Paid, The Less Freedom You Have’.

Actor Ethan Hawke said that he has always enjoyed doing small projects, because it gives him more freedom.

Of his unconventional choices he tells Collider:

“I’ve always been interested in creative freedom, and the truth is that the more you get paid, the less freedom you have. They never pay you for nothing. That’s just always the way it is. I’ve managed to do this for more than 20 years, and keep dodging and weaving and not being one thing. I’ve always resisted that. I wanted the freedom to do something else. I didn’t want to try to do Long Day’s Journey into Night and have the audience go, ‘Oh, there’s Batman.’ You know what I mean?”

He continues saying that throughout his career he has tried to do things which are interesting to him and he has not always made the right decision and his projects have not always turned out the way he wanted them to.

Hawke states that he feels he has more freedom to do what he really wants, working for independent filmmakers as opposed to big Hollywood studios.

He adds:

“But, I’ve tried to stay interested in my job, and I’ve succeeded at that. Doing little projects helps me because I feel like I don’t work for anybody.

Hawke made these comments while promoting his new film, the horror thriller “The Purge”, which explores the government’s response to increased crime activity and overcrowded prisons and what happens when, in any given 12-hour period, once every year, anything is allowed and even murder is legal.

During these particular 12 hours, James and Mary Sandin and their two kids, will realize exactly how violent their world can be.

“The Purge” opens on June 7th and is written and directed by James DeMonaco. It stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady. Will you go and see what can happen during 12 lawless hours?
