New Dunkin Donuts Sandwich Puts Egg And Bacon Between A Glazed Doughnut

A new Dunkin Donuts sandwich provides a breakfast-twist on the so-awful-you-have-to-try-it doughnut burger. Listen up, arteries: the new Dunkin Donuts sandwich is a fried egg and two slices of bacon between a halved glazed doughnut.

Though the pressure is on for most fast food chains to start offering healthier menu choices if they want to stay in business, Dunkin Donuts is seemingly going the other way with their new egg-bacon-doughnut sandwich, set to debut nationwide on June 7.

June 7, which is also “National Donut Day,” will see the new sandwich become a permanent staple on the menu. It was first tested in select stores in Massachusetts, but will go nationwide after it generated considerable buzz online.

It’s called the “Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich” and it clocks in at 360 calories. You’d think it’d be more.

In any event, the new sandwich debuts at a time when many competing restaurants are trying to offer healthier, low calorie options on their menus. A report from the Hudson Institute earlier this year found that low-cal options were a huge factor in how restaurants grew between 2006 and 2011.

Chains which offered more health-conscious options saw their customer traffic go up by 11 percent. Those that didn’t comply with market demand saw their traffic fall by 15 percent.

Conversely, some restaurants seem to be getting away with more hedonistic options depending on their appeal. For instance, the Doritos taco at Taco Bell was the most successful menu item of all time for the chain, with earnings increasing by around 8 percent.

Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of product innovation at Dunkin’ Donuts, said that the new sandwich is part of an effort to offer as much variety to their customers as possible.

What do you think? Are you tempted to try the new Dunkin Donuts sandwich?
