Obama To Survey Tornado Damage In Oklahoma

President Barack Obama will survey the tornado damage in Moore, Oklahoma later this afternoon.

Reuters reports that the President departed Washington on Sunday morning and is scheduled to tour the disaster area later today. Obama will also met with effected family members and local politicians to talk about the damage and the recovery process.

The massive tornado in Moore, Oklahoma killed 24 people and destroyed two schools, a hospital, and several homes.

President Obama said on Wednesday: “They have suffered mightily this week … And while the road ahead will be long, their country will be with them every single step of the way.”

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said that she appreciated the visit from President Obama but added that a visit was not enough to restore the Oklahoma city. Fallin said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been a great help so far but that she’s worried about the city’s long term recovery.

Fallin said: “There’s going to come a time when there’s going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses … And we know at different times in the past, money hasn’t come always as quickly as it should.”
