Hero Cop Charged With Raping Two Women

Philadelphia – A former cop who was once hailed as a hero and even sat down next to Michelle Obama during a speech by President Obama has been arrested and charged with rape, among other crimes.

According to authorities, 27-year-old Richard DeCoatsworth met with two 20-year-old women at a party on Thursday around 2am. He had a relationship of some kind with one of the women, and they all three went to one of their homes afterwards.

When they arrived, DeCoatsworth allegedly forced the women to engage “in the use of narcotics and sexual acts.”

He was arrested and charged with rape, sexual assault, and terroristic threats.

DeCoatsworth was lauded as a hero cop after being shot in the face during a routine traffic stop in 2007. Despite his injury, he managed to chase down his own shooter, who was sentenced to 36 to 72 years in prison.

In 2009, DeCoatsworth was invited by Vice President Joe Biden to attend President Obama’s televised address to Congress. There, he sat with Michelle Obama.

Afterwards, DeCoatsworth admitted he had no idea why he had been invited, or why he was singled out by the vice president. Still, he called being among our nation’s leaders an honor “that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.”

He was involved in several other tense altercations in the years following.

Also in 2009, he was involved in an incident which left a suspect dead. Another in the same year involved a chase, shots fired, and resulted in local witnesses claiming that DeCoatsworth and another officer had shown excessive force against individuals who had done nothing wrong.

In 2011, he was investigated by Internal Affairs after an alleged fight with another officer. That year, he got nine citizen complaints, accusing him of assault, abuse and misconduct.

He retired on disability in December 2011.
