Detroit Lions come out swinging in free agency

I have been a Detroit Lions fan for more than 20 years, and I have never seen this team be so aggressive in free agency. I have heard head coaches, General Managers, and the like give press conferences saying hat everything is fine, we have a plan, and then the make some crazy signing or trade that brings nothing in return. Current Lions GM Martin Mayhew may not be telling us what his plan is, but it seems pretty clear he will not tolerate all the losing.

In the late 1990’s then Lions head coach promised to give non performing players a bus ticket out of town. We all laughed because we knew it was not true, but the current lions staff seems intent on doing just that. After going 2-14 last season it now looks like the Lions will have five new starters on their defense.

So far in Free Agency the Lions have added DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, WR Nate Burleson, and CB Jonathan Wade. They have also traded for DT Corey Williams, and CB Chris Houston. The best thing abut those trade is they cost the team virtually nothing. A few late round draft picks, and the free agents will only cost the team money. In an uncapped year that means it costs them nothing.

Dare I say that the Lions are making moves to be a competitive NFL team? It certainly appears so, and while it is virtually assured that not all these moves will work out, at the very least the entire roster is going through an upgrade. While they still have a lot of work to get done, it seems they are finally on the right track.
