‘Elementary’ To Film Season 2 Premiere In London

The second season premiere of CBS’ crime drama Elementary will be filming in London, marking the first time the series has shot on location outside of New York.

The series, which is a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes, is not only set in the United States, but also features a female Watson (played by Lucy Liu).

In the premiere, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), a former consultant to Scotland Yard, is called back to London to revisit an old case. While there, Holmes is forced to confront his past. At the same time, Watson learns more about her partner and the life he lived before moving to New York.

According to creator and executive producer Robert Doherty, the premiere is “an opportunity to see Sherlock’s old stomping grounds and take a closer look at a life that, until now, we’ve only been able to glimpse through the lens of his recovery.”

Doherty added, “Watson’ll have to keep up with a Sherlock who is both more comfortable in his surroundings and even bolder in testing the limits of those around him.”

In Elementary, much like its source material, Holmes is a (recovering) drug addict. He moved to New York for rehab, but decided to stay in the US because it had more interesting cases than England. When Holmes contacts Captain Tobias Gregson (Aidan Quinn) to get his old job back, he is forced by his father to live with Dr. Joan Watson, a former surgeon who will be his “sober companion.” Watson eventually becomes Holmes’ apprentice.

Elementary premiered on September 27, 2012 and was picked up for a full season on October 23. Less than a month later, on November 15, CBS ordered two more episodes, bringing the season total to 24. The series was renewed for a second season on March 27.

While last Thursday’s episode recorded a series low of 9.75 million viewers, Elementary has performed fairly steadily in the ratings. The pilot pulled in 13.41 million viewers, but subsequent episodes pull anywhere from 10 to 11 million viewers. The February 3 episode, “The Deductionist,” however, pulled a series high of 20.80 million viewers.

The two-hour season finale of Elementary will air Thursday, May 16.
