When she is not making chart-topping hits and Rare Beauty makeup, the pop star spends her time watching true crime documentaries or listening to crime podcasts.

She even once went to CrimeCon - a weekend event that lets true crime fans experience analyzing and solving an actual case.

“You go and get an actual case that’s open,” Gomez explained in an interview. “Sometimes it’s been open for 20 years, other times it’s sooner, but basically you get to go in and be a part of the case. It’s real, and it’s really crazy. You go there as someone who wants to help solve the case.”

The 29-year-old actress, who has produced a number of successful shows including 13 Reasons Why and Selena + Chef, recently partnered with TV network Univision for an upcoming true crime docuseries.

“As a true crime fan, I was immediately captivated when I heard the story surrounding the homicide of Juan Guerrero Chapa. Not only did it take place close to my hometown in Texas, but it was also a story unlike anything I’ve ever heard,” Gomez said in a statement. “I am excited to partner with Univision and really pull back the layers of his double life.”

According to reports, the three-part docuseries will follow "the cold-blooded homicide of a former cartel lawyer and high-level cooperator for the U.S. government, Juan Guerrero Chapa, and the subsequent investigation and trial.”

The fatal shooting happened at an upscale Dallas shopping center back in 2013. It was later revealed that Chapa was the leader of the notorious Gulf cartel, one of the most violent drug cartels in Mexico.

Currently, Gomez is also busy filming the second season of Only Murders in the Building with comedy veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The second season will be tackling the aftermath of the new murder that happened on the finale of season one.

Show creator John Hoffman shared to Elle that Mabel Mora, played by Gomez, will be in the spotlight more in the upcoming episodes.

"They're all in the hot seat. They've all stepped in it, and Mabel is certainly even a bit more in the spotlight," Hoffman said. "The opportunity that might come from that is what's intriguing to us as we go into a season two. Mabel's life is going to get a little bit bigger in season 2."
