Week 4 of the 2021 NFL season featured one of the biggest games of Mac Jones' rookie season. In the recent Sunday Night Football where the New England Patriots faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jones went up against the man who led his current team for 20 straight years - seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.

Brady and the Buccaneers may have walked away with a 19-17 victory, but Jones managed to show everyone in the league that the future is bright in New England in the post-TB12 era.

Jones may have gone through plenty of ups and downs in his first three games in the NFL but in their matchup against Brady and the Patriots, he stood out. The recent game between the Patriots and the Buccaneers was supposed to be about Brady's return to New England since they parted ways in the summer of 2020.

However, despite the loss, Ryan Spagnoli of SB Nation's Pats Pulpit believes that Jones successfully stole the show from Brady and "outdueled" him in their first faceoff.

"It was a tough loss, but Jones went toe-to-toe and outdueled Brady — the guy who he spent his childhood idolizing — which is something to build on going forward," Spagnoli wrote.

Their recent game against Brady and the Buccaneers was undeniably Jones' best performance so far since he was drafted as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. On Sunday night, the Patriots rookie quarterback completed 31 of 40 pass attempts for 275 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

During the third and fourth quarters, Jones completed 19 consecutive passes which are considered the longest such streak by a rookie quarterback in 30 years. He was also hit 12 times by the Buccaneers' front seven.

In a post-game interview with reporters, Jones talked about his encounter with Brady after the game. Jones said that he congratulated Brady for their third win in the 2021 NFL season. He also revealed that the message he got from the former Patriots' signal-caller.

"Yeah, after the game, I got a chance to congratulate him on the win and he's a great quarterback and yeah, he played well tonight and that's pretty much all there was to it," Jones said, as quoted by NBC Sports Boston. "(Brady) just told me to keep my head up and keep working."

Mac Jones Defends Coach Bill Belichick

The highly-anticipated game between the Patriots and the Buccaneers didn't end without controversy. Though they entered the matchup against Brady and the Buccaneers as the heavy underdogs, it was a winnable game for Jones and the Patriots. However, some people think that the Patriots lost their chance to beat Brady's team when Coach Bill Belichick opted for a 56-yard field goal on fourth-and-3.

During his post-game interview, Jones came to defend Belichick and expressed support to his late-game decision.

“[Coach Belichick] makes the right decisions most all the time. We’re going to stick behind his decision no matter what,” Jones said, via SB Nation's Pats Pulpit_.
