Lauryn Hill Says She Was ‘Required’ To Release New Single

Lauryn Hill recently dropped the new single “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)” online. However, the singer apparently wasn’t altogether happy about the circumstances surrounding its release.

It’s been around three years since Hill has given her fans a brand new track to sink their teeth into. Although it’s now available for the masses to enjoy, she apparently wasn’t very pleased with how things played out.

Lauryn Hill addressed the circumstances surrounding the release of the new single on her official Tumblr page. According to the singer, she was “required” to release the track due to a legal deadline.

The singer explained:

“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”

Lauryn Hill is facing some serious legal trouble after she pleaded guilty to tax evasion last year. The singer will be required to pay the rest of her restitution before sentencing. She had previously paid $50,000 towards her $554,000 tax bill.

The former Fugees singer skipped out on her taxes between 2005 and 2007. She reportedly made around $1.8 million over that period of time. Hill claimed that a series of threats made towards her and her family caused her to disappear from the public eye. This is also the reason she gave for not paying her taxes.

Although reports circulated last month that she signed a record deal with Sony Worldwide Entertainment for millions of dollars, Lauren Hill said the rumors about her paycheck were pretty much wrong.

“The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me),” she explained in another Tumblr post.
