Texas Governor Greg Abbott is calling on some help to protect the U.S.-Mexico border -- and delivering a sharp criticism of Joe Biden's administration in doing so.

Abbott announced this week that he would be deploying the National Guard and Texas state troopers to respond to what was seen as a growing crisis of smuggling people and drugs over the border. As Breitbart noted, Abbott is deploying help through a number of outlets and using several approaches.

As the report noted, Abbott dubbed the approach Operation Lone Star and said that Biden's border policies necessitated the move.

“The crisis at our southern border continues to escalate because of Biden Administration policies that refuse to secure the border and invite illegal immigration,” Abbott said in a statement. “Texas supports legal immigration but will not be an accomplice to the open border policies that cause, rather than prevent, a humanitarian crisis in our state and endanger the lives of Texans. We will surge the resources and law enforcement personnel needed to confront this crisis.”

Abbott's move comes as the number of migrant detentions at the U.S.-Mexico border has increased. Breitbart noted that Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar said this week that 10,000 migrants were apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley Sector over the course of one week.

Cuellar called for action to stem the crisis.

“We are weeks, maybe even days, away from a crisis on the southern border. Inaction is simply not an option,” Congressman Cuellar said in a written statement. “Our country is currently unprepared to handle a surge in migrants in the middle of the pandemic.”

Migrants Could Complicate Health Crisis

As the Breitbart report suggested, migrants crossing the border into the United States could make the already dire health crisis even more complicated. The report noted that many are COVID-19 positive at the time they cross the border, with officials in Brownsville saying that 6 percent of migrants released from detention at a bus station are testing positive. As the report noted, officials are not able to stop these people from boarding buses and traveling further into the United States.

Abbott And Biden Have Clashed Before

Abbott has already clashed with Biden through the first few weeks of the new administration. Just before the announcement of Operation Lone Star, Abbott went against the Biden administration's COVID-19 guidelines by opening up the state and dropping the mask mandate.

Biden would publicly criticize the move.

"Texas — I think it's a big mistake," Biden said, via the Texas Tribune. "We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because the way in which we are able to get vaccines in people's arms. The last thing — the last thing — we need is Neanderthal thinking in the meantime."
