‘Dallas’ Renewed By TNT For Third Season

Dallas has been renewed for a third season by TNT, according to a press release the network sent out on Tuesday.

Speaking out on the decision to renew, Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS, and Turner Classic Movies, credited the revamped version of the 1980s classic for building “a passionately loyal following with its expertly woven storylines, clever twists and turns, and numerous outstanding performances by a cast that spans generations.”

Wright continued: “Although we said goodbye to Larry Hagman and his iconic character J.R. Ewing this year, Dallas has many more stories left to tell, and the Ewing clan will continue to honor J.R.’s memory by keeping its audience surprised and delighted.”

Hagman died in November 2012 at age 81. In spite of battling cancer, he managed to reprise his role for one full season of the revamped version and six of the 15 episodes in season two.

The character was given a fitting sendoff earlier this year, providing a boost to its ratings.

The network released final numbers on Tuesday, noting that it was basic cable’s number one new drama with key adult demographics. In its second season, Dallas paced at 3.8 million live viewers with 1.6 million at ages 25 to 54 and 1.4 million in the 18 to 49 demo.

The network pulled out all the stops for their final farewell to TV’s greatest villain, bringing together some of Ewing’s greatest foes and family members. If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, here’s a peek:

Variety noted that the third season Dallas was renewed for would feature an additional 15 episodes.

The original series was created by David Jacobs and ran for 14 seasons from 1978 through 1991. During that time, Hagman was the show’s immediately recognizable icon. Clearly, you don’t replace J.R. Ewing, but it should be interesting to see what TNT comes up with to continue his legacy.

Are you pleased at the news of Dallas renewed for a third season, or is it time to call it quits?
