Bombers’ Times Square Plan: Tsarnaev Brothers Wanted To Target New York

The suspected Boston bombers had a Times Square plan to bring even more destruction after killing three people and injuring close to 180 at Boston Marathon.

The bombers’ Times Square Plan was revealed through investigations in recent days, with New York investigators unveiling about the Tsarnaev brothers’ plot to blow up their remaining explosives in the Big Apple.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar reportedly came up with the plan to drive to Times Square on Thursday, coming with it after federal investigators had released pictures of the suspects from the scene of the April 15 bombing at the Boston Marathon.

It was later that night that the brothers shot and killed Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer Sean Collier, setting off a gun battle with Boston police in Watertown that left Tamerlan dead and Dzhokhar on the run. He was found later on Friday hiding in a boat in a Watertown backyard.

Dzhokhar has since recovered from his injuries during the standoff and began talking to police officers, offering details of the bombers’ Times Square plan. After initially claiming he was going to travel to New York to party, Dzhokhar reportedly admitted that he and his brother were planning an attack.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the bombers’ Times Square plan was not originally part of their plot but that they “decided spontaneously” on New York as a target after hijacking a Mercedes on Thursday night.

A witness reportedly told police that, after hijacking the car, Tamerlan Tstarnaev said, “We just killed a cop. We blew up the Marathon. And now we’re going to New York. Don’t [expletive] with us.”

The bombers’ Times Square plan could have been destructive, police said. The brothers had an arsenal that included six bombs — five pipe bombs and one pressure cooker bomb like those used in the attack on the Boston Marathon.
