Utah School Evacuated Over Pipe Bomb

A Utah school was evacuated over a pipe bomb found on the roof by a custodian. Almost 800 students and teachers were removed from the school temporarily on Monday.

School district spokesman Christopher Williams explained that no one was injured in the incident. The custodian was able to remove the pipe bomb and alert the school principal, who called police in.

Police detonated the bomb with a high-pressure cannon at Mountain View Elementary School in Layton. The city is about 25 miles north of Salt Lake City. Williams added:

“Why he did that and where he took it, we’re not sure. He put himself in a dangerous situation.”

A different custodian reported being on the roof on Friday to retrieve a ball. He added that he did not see any suspicious devices where the bomb was discovered on Monday. Williams was quick to assure, “That doesn’t mean it wasn’t up there. As to who may have placed it up there, we have no idea at this point.”

Bomb-sniffing dogs from nearby Hill Air Force Base were called to the Utah school after it was evacuated. They searched the premises but did not find any other devices. No threat were received at Mountain View Elementary School or any other school in the district before Monday’s incident.

Williams added that no other bombs were found on district property in the past. He explained that the school was prepared for Monday’s incident, despite no previous threats. Williams stated:

“We drill a lot for fire, intruders, disasters. That means when there’s a real situation like today, everything goes smoothly. Under the circumstances, things went as well as they could.”

Officials are still working to determine who may have placed the pipe bomb on the Utah elementary school’s roof. So far, they have not released any names of possible suspects.
