One dead, one wounded in Shooting at Luke AFB

Two men allegedly trying to leave Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix with a stolen vehicle were shot late Monday by security guards during a police chase.

Officials say one of the men died, and one was wounded in the incident. The men were shot by the guards as they attempted to “ram” a stolen car through a gate at Luke AFB in attempt to flee pursuing authorities. Authorities set up a roadblock, and the security guards, fearing for their safety, are said to have opened fire on the fleeing suspects.

The identities of the suspects have not been released. Authorities have also said the act is not believed to be related to terrorism:

“Once they were inside, our security forces confronted them, set up a road block and tried to stop them,” Gonzalez said. “When they charged toward the roadblock, our security forces opened fire on them.”

Gonzalez said it had not been determined whether a gunshot or injuries when the vehicle crasked killed the one suspect.

He said base security acted swiftly.

“In a post 9-11 world, if somebody comes in, our mission is basically to protect our base and protect our people. So security forces were engaged immediately.”
