Boy Scouts To Lift Gay Ban? Officials To Vote On New Policy This Week

The Boy Scouts are expected to lift a ban on openly gay scouts.

According to the NY Times, officials with the Boy Scouts of America said today that they are proposing a new policy that will end the ban on openly gay scouts. They new proposal will, however, continue to ban gay adults from serving as scout leaders.

This is a big step forward for the Boy Scouts. The organization has been under fire for years for banning openly gay scouts. Several celebrities, musicians, and former scouts have denounced the organization saying that the Boy Scouts need to catch up with modern times.

The policy proposal will help end discrimination against LGBT youth, but several people are still upset with the organization.

John Aravosis at the American Blog writes: “Let gay troops join, but once the troops grow up they all become pedophiles and have to be banned again lest they rape all the young Boy Scouts in their midst. How progressive of them.”

What do you think of the new policy? Are the Boy Scouts taking a step forward by allowing gay troops? Are they doing the right thing by keeping the ban against gay scout leaders?

ABC reports that the Boy Scouts of America announced today that the new proposal will be submitted this week to the National Council at a meeting in Texas. The 1,400 voting members will then vote on whether or not they will lift the ban on gay scouts.
