World of Warcraft add-on allowed to launch in China

Just as it seemed the World of Warcraft juggernaut was beginning to slow, with the total number of subscribers frozen for the last 15 months, along comes China to save the day.

Chinese authorities have just granted permission for Blizzard Entertainment’s Chinese partner, NetEase.com, to launch World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade in China. The Burning Crusade is an expansion pack that sold 2.4 million copies in its first day on sale.

You may remember how China and World of Warcraft have had a checkered past, so this is wonderful news for series creator Blizzard. China boasts more than four million of World of Warcraft‘s 11.5 million global players, so in other words: KER-CHING.

It’s likely the Chinese version will be censored – just as the original game was by the Chinese government censors – but hey, it’s coming.
