‘Evil Dead’ Snags Top Spot At Weekend Box Office


Director Feded Alvarez’s Evil Dead has topped the weekend box office.

The remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic generated quite a bit of money for the suits at Columbia Pictures. The movie made an estimated $26 million over the course of the past three days. The movie seemed to surpass expectations, though it didn’t quite make the $30 million some had anticipated.

Given that the Evil Dead remake was crafted on a production budget of around $17 million, it’s safe to say that Alvarez and company have a box office hit on their hands. The movie will likely earn even more money once it makes its way onto Blu-ray and DVD.

The film’s overseas total was a little lower than what it earned in North America. Box office receipts from foreign markets totaled approximately $4.5 million.

“Fede did an amazing job remaking this film. When you think you’ve seen it all, they bring in something new. The movie really is scary,” Sony’s Rory Bruer told The Hollywood Reporter.

The 3D release of director Steven Spielberg’s classic Jurassic Park was also a pretty big hit with moviegoers over the weekend. The flick brought home around $18.2 million for the folks at Universal Pictures.

The film originally made $375 million during its original theatrical run. The movie was also a hit with foreign audiences as well; the dino-related adventure made $560 million outside the US. The re-release could push the international total above $1 billion.

Last weekend’s number one movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped into second with an estimated $21.1 million. The DreamWorks animated family movie The Croods also made around $21.1 million. Although it would appear that the films have tied for the same position, one will emerge victorious when the actual figures are released Monday afternoon.

The Gerard Butler action thriller Olympus Has Fallen rounded out this weekend’s top five. The movie, which shares a similar plot with the Channing Tatum flick White House Down, made around $10 million in ticket sales.
