Rep. John Murtha in ICU after gallbladder surgery

Rep. John Murtha, 77, is in the intensive care unit of a Virginia hospital after suffering complications following gallbladder surgery, the Washington Post is reporting.

A spokesman for Rep. Murtha declined to discuss the details of the complications that the congressman suffered, although unintentional cuts occur on bile ducts occasionally during laparoscopic surgery:

“Congressman Murtha underwent a scheduled laparoscopic surgery to remove his gallbladder last week,” his spokesman Matt Mazonkey said. “Complications did arise from the surgery and he is currently at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.”

Murtha underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder last week after first experiencing gallbladder pain in December. Murtha was first elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1969.
