Michelle Shocked Says She’s Not Homophobic

Michelle Shocked said she is not homophobic during a recent interview with Piers Morgan.

The folk singer has been the center of controversy since spouting an anti-gay rant during a show in San Francisco last month. Shocked has been on damage control since the incident took place. Her recent attempt to calm the waters found her discussing the matter with Piers Morgan.

When the host asked Michelle Shocked if she was homophobic, she replied: “Absolutely not.”

The singer added, “If you want to keep this simple for the audience, let me just give you a straight no. I’m not homophobic, but I don’t think the truth lies in the simplicity. I think it’s in the nuance and I think that’s been completely lost.”

She told Morgan that she made a serious mistake when she discussed Proposition 8 with the people who had paid to see her perform. Shocked followed up her apology with the following explanation:

“If I had the chance to do it again, I don’t think I would have taken the audience up on their choice. I had presented an entire performance, and I framed it as ‘truth,’ and then I came out back out for an encore, and they requested ‘reality.'”

The singer added:

“And what has consequently taken place ever since then is my manifestation of how little I think of reality. I know that it’s a stock-in-trade for a lot of the media to just present things like that’s how it really is. But I don’t think the audience was ready for the consequences of that, and I surely have not been happy with it.”

Michelle Shocked has faced a number of cancellations after her anti-gay comments started making the rounds. The singer reportedly showed up to a canceled show in Santa Cruz with tape over her mouth. She previously announced her protest on Twitter.
