The Wachowskis are teaming up with Netflix for an original science fiction series.
The project will be exclusively delivered to those individuals who subscribe to the company’s streaming service. The filmmakers will reportedly work with Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski to bring the show to the small screen.
The Netflix series Sense8 will mark Andy and Lana Wachowski’s first excursion into the world of television. The pair are best known for their work on The Matrix trilogy. The duo’s previous effort, the sci-fi flick Cloud Atlas, was released into theaters last year.
The science fiction series has been cryptically described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.” Netflix hopes to have the show ready to go for its streaming subscribers towards the end of next year.
Sense8 will run for 10 episodes when it launches on the service in 2014. Even the Wachowskis were vague about what viewers can expected from the upcoming series.
“Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox ‘Sense8’ was born,” the filmmakers said in a statement.
Netflix is hoping to replicate the success it had with the Kevin Spacey series House of Cards. The streaming service will unveil the Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove in April.
As for the Wachowskis, the filmmakers are currently gearing up for their next cinematic effort. The pair are currently putting together Jupiter Ascending for the suits at Warner Bros. The movie is expected to arrive in July of 2014.
Vulture described the film’s plot as follows:
“The first entry in a trilogy, centers on an unlikely heroine: A recent Russian immigrant who is busily scrubbing toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she actually possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule. A bounty hunter of the evolved-being type is dispatched to dispose of the Cleaning Lady with the Great Pair of Nucloetides, but they fall in love.”
