Mom Buys Two-Year-Old Daughter $6.5m Apartment

If you thought Suri Cruise was spoiled rotten, you ain’t seen nothing yet. A Chinese mother has just splashed out $6.5 million on an exclusive Manhattan flat for her daughter, who also happens to be two years old.

The Daily Mail reports on the eye-catching property purchase, which saw an apartment at the ritzy One57 building in New York sold to an unnamed buyer. The tower, a 90-floor glass skyscraper that is due to open next year, is situated on 157 West 57th Street and overlooks Central Park. It is set to become New York’s tallest residential building.

The sale was overlooked by Kevin Brown, senior VP at Sotheby’s International. He told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV:

“We were running around the city looking at things and I finally said, ‘Well, why are you buying?’ And she said, well, her daughter was going to go to Columbia, or NYU or maybe Harvard and so she needed to be in the centre of the city and that was why she was picking this one particular apartment. So I said, ‘Oh, how old is your daughter?’ and she said, ‘Well, she’s two.’ And I was just shocked.’

For her $6.5 million, the mystery buyer will receive a 10,923-square-foot space with unbeatable views across the city. The building, designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc, features a full service spa, a screening room, a private dining room, and a dedicated pet wash room.

Each residence’s kitchen comes in two possible finishes and is equipped with two 36-inch refrigerators, granite counters, two dishwashers (for units of three or more bedrooms) and a full-sized wine cooler. Selected cabinets pull out from the kitchen island to become stools.

Despite the scary price tags, apartments in the building are already selling quickly. Lawrence Stroll and Silas Chou, the pair behind fashion label Michael Kors, have already penned contracts for $50 million full-floor apartments in the tower. Furthermore, a “recognizable” buyer (it may or may not be the Prime Minister of Qatar) has purchased a penthouse on the 89th and 90th floor. The price? $95million.

Nearby rival luxury buildings are expected to see their prices plummet when One57 opens.
