Latest ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Spoiler Seems Doubtful

New plot and character details for Marc Webb’s upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 have emerged today, with one pretty major spoiler that we’re not entirely sure what to do with.

SPOILER WARNING: We’ll discuss new plot and character details, as well as the major spoiler we mentioned below.

So far, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees the return of Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy). While the emotional core of the film will focus on their relationship, Shailene Woodley will be introduced in some capacity as eventual Spider-Man wife Mary Jane Watson, so there’s a new character arc.

We all know that Jamie Foxx is joining the cast as Max Dillon/Electro, and we knew that he wouldn’t be wearing the traditional yellow-and-green garb from the original comics. Insiders are now saying “think Ultimate version,” which means he’ll be wearing a black leather get-up with skin becoming all blue and translucent when he uses his electricity mojo. For the film’s purposes, he’ll also be an Oscorp employee.

One rumor we can crush pretty handily is the “Venom rumor.” A morgue shot released last month was seen by some as a Venom reference, but it’s actually where Dillon is taken after his “accident” (probably whatever turns him into Electro).

Also, though Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osborn (and Dane DeHaan as son Harry), there will be no Green Goblin in this film. There will be a lot of foreshadowing for future films, and at the very least, this version of Norman is still dying (which was hinted at in the previous film).

The biggest potential spoiler (from a volunteer contributor at ComicBookMovie) is that Gwen Stacy’s character will indeed bite the big one in this film. The shocking part of the spoiler is that the source says she won’t even be around very long. She might go in the first act.

I kind of doubt they’ll kill Stacy off early in Amazing Spider-Man 2 or even at all, really. Though Webb is doing his own take on Spider-Man lore, it seems like he’s been setting up the pieces for Norman Osborn to become Green Goblin and kill Stacy himself (like he did in the comics), so if Cooper isn’t dipping into the green face paint in TASM 2, then either Electro or Rhino will have to off her, and I don’t think that makes very much sense at all.

Plus, more Goblin hints in the sequel, a minor role for Mary Jane to set her up as a future love interest, it just doesn’t fit for me that Stacy bites it in the next one, or even early.

The only possibility I could fathom is if we see Osborn slowly lose his marbles over the course of the story and turn to a “miracle cure” for his illness that transforms him into the monstrous and demonic-looking Green Goblin from the Ultimate comics. He does this late in the film, and maybe Stacy tries to intervene in the lab, with Osborn killing her prior to his transformation which occurs off-screen. Nice cliffhanger for a sequel, but even that might lack dramatic impact.

Anyway, what do you think? Could Gwen Stacy die in Amazing Spider-Man 2? We’ll find out for sure on May 2, 2014.
