Dallas Cowboys extend Phillips till 2011

Sometimes I really don’t understand Jerry Jones, and the way he chooses to run his football team. Based on the words that have come out of this guy’s mouth he has never been happy with Wade Phillips as his head coach. A few years ago he even went out of his way to give his Offensive Coordinator Jason Garret a huge contract that seemed to install him as the favorite to replace Phillips as head coach of the Cowboys. Once Garret fell out of favor, it seems Phillips remains the head coach by default.

Jones continually says he is encouraged by the job that Phillips has done, but he is not satisfied with the results. I hate to break it to you Jerry but this is what you get with Wade as the head coach. He will have a great regular season, and much like Marty Schottenheimer and Wade’s dad Bum Phillips before him success in the playoffs is just not in the cards. Phillips is 1-4 for his career in the post season, and it often seems as he plays those games not to lose, which means he doesn’t win them. I see little evidence that this is going to change.

In a way one has to feel a little bit bad for Wade. His career record as a NHL head Coach is actually pretty good, 80-54 with a winning percentage of .600. That is not to shabby at all, but that 1-4 record in the layoffs will always be there to haunt him. Jerry wants his Cowboys to win more Super Bowls, and it doesn’t seem like Phillips is the coach to help him get that done.
