Kansas City, MO – Shocking video of a violent man storming the stage during the mayor’s “state of the city” speech has made its way online.
Mayor Sly James of Kansas City was in the middle of a public and pretty upbeat “state of the city” speech on Tuesday when an angry unnamed man stormed the stage at the Gem Theater and commandeered the microphone.
James was talking about the city’s image and various stadium projects it has funded when the violent protestor stormed onto the stage, grabbed the Missouri state flag from its stand, and launched it into the air. He then approached the microphone, taking it from Mayor James.
“This man had just gotten through talking about what the f*** he ain’t g****** did!” he shouted, pounding his fist on the podium.
That was about the extent of the man’s apparent protest. Two bodyguards approached him from behind and tried to wrestle him to the ground. The man resisted, and continued shouting expletives out of his frustration.
The offender was handcuffed backstage and taken to jail. It is expected that he will be charged later today.
Police Chief Darryl Forté said that the violent man wasn’t armed, and was ranting about something about his brother. His anger was not believed to be directed at the mayor. Still, the incident caused concern and has prompted law enforcement to take a second look at security procedures for the mayor.
After the interruption, Mayor James quickly re-gained composure, and resumed his speech before the crowd of 250.
“It’s unfortunate that we have people who feel that somehow we have left them behind. I don’t blame him for whatever feelings he wanted to express. I do have a small problem with the method,” the mayor said immediately following the interruption. The crowd replied with a standing ovation.
I am deeply grateful my security detail, Marlon and Cssey, that is now twice when my security detail has saved me from harm. #lovemesomeKCPD

After the speech, Mayor James said that the interruption did not scare him, and that he still plans on speaking in public.
“I wondered what set that off and what he was trying to say,” Mayor James said. “I was a little surprised that when he came up there, as vociferous as he was, he never actually did anything to me.”
He also sang high praises for his security detail.
“Those guys are super,” he said. “They were right there. They did everything they need to do. They got him out of there.”
