U.S. China Google Crisis Draws Near As Proof Presented That Chinese Gov. Behind Attacks

U.S. China relations could be heading to a crisis point after clear evidence has been published that the Chinese Government was behind cyber attacks on Google and a range of other U.S. tech companies.

VeriSign’s iDefense security lab has published a report that “unambiguously declares” that the Chinese government was behind the attacks. “The source IPs and drop server of the attack correspond to a single foreign entity consisting either of agents of the Chinese state or proxies thereof,” Ars Technica says the report states.

The New York Times reports that so far the Obama Administration is “treading lightly” on the cyber attack issue, despite coming out in support of Google’s decision to offer Chinese internet users uncensored search results.

The same report notes that Hillary Clinton, “the most senior U.S. official to talk of the seriousness of the breach, discussed it on Thursday with a Chinese diplomat in Washington, however, and a senior administration official said there would be a “démarche in coming days” — a diplomatic move.”

This is the ultimate catch 22 for the Obama Administration: if they say nothing, or nothing much, then they appear to be ignoring the fact that the Chinese Government is attacking American companies. If they go on the offensive, then they risk a major crisis in China/ U.S. relations, possibly one of the biggest in recent history.
