Robert Duvall Attached To Star As Robert Downey Jr’s Dad

Robert Downey Jr knew exactly who he wanted to play his father in the upcoming dramedy that sees him outside of his franchise films like Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man. However, the final choice to play the pivotal role in the upcoming dramedy film The Judge wasn’t Jack Nicholson like Robert Downey Jr had anticipated.

Instead we will get to see Robert Duvall back on the big screen to star in The Judge, opposite Robert Downey Jr. The film is said to be directed by David Dobkin. The script which underwent a rewrite by Bill Dubuque follows Robert Downey Jr. as a big shot lawyer, who returns home after an extended period of time away to learn that his mother has been murdered.

Robert Duvall comes into the film as the estranged father of Downey Jr., and is the first suspect in murdering his deceased wife. While Downey is looking for a way to clear his father’s name, the two are able to connect.

Initially Warner Bros did take Robert Downey Jr’s request seriously and lobbied for Jack Nicholson. However, Nicholson turned the role down, but Duvall isn’t a bad choice either.

Duvall, unlike Nicholson has been working steadily as he grows older, acing plum roles in films like Jack Reacher, Hemingway & Gelhorn, Seven Days in Utopia, and Crazy Heart. Duvall also recently wrapped on an independent film titled A Night In Old Mexico. In the film Duvall stars in an ensemble of Jeremy Irvine, Angie Cepeda, and Luis Tosar. The film has yet to find a distributor, but we’re willing to bet it will when it goes through the festival circuit.

Robert Downey Jr. is famous for attaching his own personal opinions on the projects he dedicates his time to. Recently the actor opened up about battling the studio to have Iron Man’s love interest Pepper Potts [Gwyneth Paltrow] given more screen time.
