Nintendo DSi XL gets first western release date

It’s big. It’s badass. It’s, uh, bodacious. And soon enough, it’s here. Nintendo just announced a March 5 release date for its new DSi XL handheld in Europe. If this is the first you’ve heard of the portable console, it’s the fourth revision of Nintendo’s wildly popular DS gaming handheld.

The European version will come bundled with free DSiWare software like Dr Kawashima’s: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition, Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function, the Nintendo DSi Browser, and the brilliant Flipnote Studio. From day one, it’ll be available in Polar White, Dark Brown, and the delicious “Wine Red” (above).

The console boasts “93% larger screens than the current Nintendo DS Lite,” and an additional longer touch screen stylus. It also that awesomely chunky stylus at the top of the picture, ideal for men with gigantic dinner plates of meat for hands (me).

No news yet on price – though it’s the equivalent of $220 in Japan – or a North American date. We’ll be hearing details from Ninty soon enough, though it’s certain to be a pretty similar launch date to Europe’s.
