Tony Gonzalez Returning To Falcons

The drama in Atlanta is over, Tony Gonzalez is returning to the Falcons for one more year of football. The future Hall of Fame tight end informed the Falcons of his decision earlier this week and the two sides are currently working on a new contract.

Tony Gonzalez was supposed to retire. He said during the 2012 NFL season that it would probably be his last. He went so far as to say there was a 95 percent chance he was going to retire. Then came reports he was wavering.

Just a few days ago is was reported his return was likely, but only for more money and less work.

Now it’s about as official as it can be without a contract being signed. Tony Gonzalez is returning for one more shot at the Lombardi Trophy. Gonzalez let his Twitter followers know on Tuesday that “the lure of being on such a great team and organization, along with unbelievable fan support was too good to pass up.”

For the Falcons the return of Tony Gonzalez means QB Matt Ryan gets one of his most reliable targets over the last four years back. Over a 16 year career Gonzalez holds a number of NFL receiving records including most yards all time for a tight end. He also has the second most career receptions of any position.

One of the only things Gonzalez has never been able to do is get to the Super Bowl. Before last season he had never won a playoff game. With his return to Atlanta, he’s in a great position to make one more run at glory. With Matt Ryan throwing to Gonzalez, Roddy White, and Julio Jones, the Falcons have one of the most dynamic passing games in the NFL.

Tony Gonzalez sent out three tweets:

Atlanta Falcons fans should be excited. The return of Gonzalez keeps one of the most dangerous passing attacks in the NFL alive. Even though nothing is official until a contract is signed, a deal should get done quickly.

Are you surprised that Tony Gonzalez is returning for one more year?
