Guard Charged In Cookies For Sex Scandal

A guard accused of trading cookies for sex with a female inmate is facing sexual misconduct charges for his involvement in the scandal, according to court papers filed in Washington this week.

On Tuesday, prosecutors filed charges against 58-year-old Abner Canda, a corrections officer at the Snohomish County Jail in Everett, Washington. Canda is suspected of soliciting sexual favors from a female inmate at the jail in exchange for homemade chocolate chip cookies.

The 22-year-old inmate reportedly came forward in January, offering police details of several sexual encounters she had with Canda while she was incarcerated. A probable cause affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun refers to the female by the initials C.D.

“I’m sorry,” the female reportedly explained to police. “I’m trying to change and be a better person now. I’m ashamed for my actions. That’s why I’m saying something.”

According to court documents, the jail guard traded cookies for sex acts with the inmate on several occasions. The woman claims that in a series of encounters with Canda, the guard kissed her and touched her breasts and genitals while she was in her cell.

During one encounter, the female reportedly exposed her breasts willingly to Canda in exchange for homemade chocolate chip cookies. During a separate incident, Canda is accused of performing oral sex on the female inmate.

The affidavit reportedly states that video surveillance footage appears to support the woman’s allegations. An inquiry conducted by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit is said to have identified two additional inmates who claim to have engaged in sexual contact with the guard.

Abner Canda, who is reportedly married, began his career as a corrections officer in 2007. Following investigation into the guard’s alleged cookies for sex scandal, Canda was put on paid leaved from his position at the Snohomish County Jail.

The first-degree custodial sexual misconduct charge filed against Canda will reportedly be followed by an internal investigation into the matter by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Accountability.
