New Wii Remote comes with MotionPlus built in

A new Wii remote for Nintendo’s sleek console and a Wii MotionPlus dongle will usually cost around $60 combined. Both items are sold separately, so if you do want to play a MotionPlus-compatible game (such as Wii Sports Resort) with friends, you’ll be paying big bucks.

Until now, that is. Using the powers of SCIENCE, peripheral manufacturer Nyko has developed the Nyko Wand+, a third-party Wii remote with MotionPlus support built in. It was shown off today at CES in Las Vegas, and will ship in March for $39.99. That’s a real bargain, considering Nyko’s controller will feature the exact same 1:1 movement tracking capability as Nintendo’s official remote.

The salient question is: will Nintendo now follow suit, and develop a controller with MotionPlus capabilities? It could happen. Previously, greedy ol’ Nintendo has been able to relax as it sells more and more $25 MotionPlus dongles.

With Nyko’s all-in-one controller in the market from March, and with the right publicity behind it, we might see Ninty revise its own controller – something I can’t ever recall happening on a Nintendo home console.
