Joss Whedon thinks recent Planet Hulk movie rumors are “nonsense.”
Reports surfaced yesterday on Latino Review that suggested The Avengers 2 would pave the way for a live-action Planet Hulk movie. However, Whedon’s response to this rumor suggests this project may not happen.
During his interview with the folks at IGN, Joss Whedon said reports of a Planet Hulk movie are entirely false.
The director said:
“Well I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense.”
The spoiler-heavy report suggested that The Avengers 2 would end with Hulk getting banished from Earth. This would essentially lay the groundwork for the supposed Planet Hulk flick.
According Yahoo! News, rumors of a Planet Hulk movie began last year. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige revealed that nothing was really off limits when it comes to future project. Although he didn’t say the Hulk standalone movie would follow this storyline, he didn’t say it wouldn’t either.
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do some day, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. ‘Planet Hulk’ is a cool story. ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story.”
“I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”
If the folks at Latino Review hit the nail on the head with their Planet Hulk report, Joss Whedon’s “nonsense” comment could possibly be a smokescreen. It’s doubtful Whedon or Marvel would want him to admit such a thing was true prior to The Avengers sequel hitting the big screen.
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2 will likely star Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson. However, nothing official about the casting has been revealed as of this writing. The film is expected to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2015.
