Titanic survivor to auction off mementos to pay nursing home

Even the last living survivor of the Titanic, Millvina Dean, is not immune from economic hardships. She is auctioning mementos from the ship to pay for her nursing home.

The 96-year old survivor is apparently having problems in making both ends meet and she hopes to raise £3,000. The auction will feature a 100-year-old suitcase filled with clothes given to her family by the people of New York after they arrived following the accident. Also up for sale are rare prints of the Titanic.

“I am selling it all now because I have to pay these nursing home fees and am selling anything that I think might fetch some money,” Dean said in an interview with the Southern daily Echo newspaper.

Millvina has been living the in the nursing home for the past two years.

The auction organized by Henry Aldridge and Son will take place on Saturday, October 18.
