Jack White Named Official Ambassador Of Record Store Day 2013

Jack White has been appointed as the official Ambassador of Record Story Day 2013.

Record Store Day is an annual international event, held on the 3rd Saturday in April, celebrating vinyl records and hard copy recordings sold in actual physical independently owned music stores. Record Store Day 2013 will be held on April 20.

Spin Magazine published a statement released this week from co-founder of Record Store Day, Michael Kurtz saying, “Jack White is a record store owner, a record label head, a record maker, and a record consumer. The passion, pride, creativity and independent spirit he puts into every one of those roles is undisputed. We can think of no better Ambassador for Record Store Day 2013, and are thrilled to have Jack White on board to celebrate the culture of the independent record store.”

Jack White issued the following as part of a longer statement in response to his new accolade as Record Store Day Ambassador, published on the Record Store Day Official Website:

“We need to re-educate ourselves about human interaction and the difference between downloading a track on a computer and talking to other people in person and getting turned onto music that you can hold in your hands and share with others. The size, shape, smell, texture and sound of a vinyl record; how do you explain to that teenager who doesn’t know that it’s a more beautiful musical experience than a mouse click? You get up off your ass, you grab them by the arm and you take them there. You put the record in their hands. You make them drop the needle on the platter. Then they’ll know. Let’s wake each other up. As Record Store Day Ambassador of 2013 I’m proud to help in any way I can to invigorate whoever will listen with the idea that there is beauty and romance in the act of visiting a record shop and getting turned on to something new that could change the way they look at the world, other people, art, and ultimately, themselves.”

Record Store Day started in 2007, founded from idea by Chris Brown and put into action by Kurtz, Eric Levin, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner. In the six years since its inception, Record Store Day has become a major international event in the music world with high profile bands and artists getting on board to promote the independent bricks and mortar selling of hard copy music. Major record industry labels including Warner Bros. Records, Sony and Universal Music are also sponsors of the event.

Record Store Day 2013 promises to be a big one. Elmore Magazine reports David Bowie will celebrate Record Store Day by releasing a limited edition 7-inch double 45 single featuring his new singles, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” and “Where Are We Now?” The Record Store Day 2013 full list of official releases will be announced in March.

Jack White takes on the role of Record Store Day 2013 Ambassador, following in the footsteps of previous ambassadors including Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne and Jesse Hughes.
