Despite bad season, Freeman has the goods

Sometimes really bad football teams have to take the long view when evaluating themselves. That is certainly the case for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as they have just one 2009 victory. With games left against the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints on the road, and the Atlanta Falcons at home it is not likely they will win another. They could win the Seattle game, and finish with two victories as it looks like the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions will, but of the three worst teams in the NFL the Bucs are in the best shape.

That may sound a little crazy, but they already got their QB. They drafted Josh Freeman with the 17th overall pick in last year’s draft. Despite being a rookie QB on a very bad football team, it looks like Freeman has the goods to be a very productive NFL QB one day. Sure he stats are not setting the world on fire, 7TD’s, 13 INT’s, and 1,207 passing yards. However he has shown enough to his coaches and his teammates that he has the potential to be the man someday, and after some more seasoning they may just have something very special in this kid.

Sure he had that five interception game against the Carolina Panthers early this year, and sure all five of those INT’s were made deep in enemy territory, with two of tem coming in the end zone, but with some seasoning those could be five TD’s or 30 points. So the Bucs were that close to putting up 30 points on an NFL team. Give this kid time and he will impress us all.

Now as it stands right now the Bucs would have the number one pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Since they have a guy in Freeman to build their offense around, they could use the overall number one pick on a guy to build their defense around. Ndamukong Suh is one of those special talents that come along once in a generation. He plays the game like Warren Sapp who was the QB Killer for many years in a Bucs uniform. Add Suh to this mix and the Bucs could be well down the road of their rebuild effort.
