Reality Show Starring Oscar Pistorius’ Dead Girlfriend To Air

Johannesburg, South Africa – A reality TV show featuring Oscar Pistorius’s dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp will still air, according to the national broadcaster. Plans to air the show were announced Saturday, just two days after the model was shot and killed at the home of the Olympic sprinter.

A statement from SABC obtained by MSN confirms that the network will go forward with plans to air Tropika Island of Treasure, a program “which features the late Reeva Steenkamp.”

Though it may seem a bit insensitive, The Huffington Post reports that the show’s airing might be in-step with the family’s wishes. Sharon Steenkamp, a cousin to Reeva, told the AP later Saturday that while no one in the family was consulted by SABC, they’re not against airing the reality program because Reeva “was proud of being in the show.”

“Her last words to us personally was that she wants us to watch it,” she said.

“They want it on,” added the show’s executive producer Samantha Moon. “This is how they want to remember her. This is what she would have wanted.”

SABC also said that the hope the show will act as a tribute to the 29-year-old model and law graduate.

“Definitely the SABC is going ahead with the airing of the program today,” said spokesman Kaizer Kganyago, “and we have indicated that we will put messages of condolences on the program.”

Do you think that it’s insensitive to air Reeva Steenkamp’s reality TV show despite her apparent murder at the hands of Oscar Pistorius? Or does the show serve as a proper tribute to her?
