Google is to lay its second fiber optic cable across the Pacific as part of a consortium building a new pipe to Asia.

The $400 million Southeast Asia Japan Cable will provide a 17 terabits per second connection from the United States to Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, and Japan.

Google’s partners in the project include Globe Telecom (Philippines), KDDI (Japan), Network i2i (India), Reliance Globalcom (Bermuda), and Telemedia Pacific Inc., Ltd.

Google’s interest in laying cable across the Pacific isn’t new; the internet giant was an investor in the Unity trans-Pacific cable, and was also rumored to be in talks to join another cable project that would provide a new pipe to Australia via Guam.
