Gloria Estefan Planning Broadway Musical With Husband Emilio

Gloria Estefan is penning a musical that will tell the story of her rise to fame. The singer and the Nederlander Organization hope to take the project to Broadway.

While no further details have been released by the parties involved, it is assumed Estefan’s unnamed production will contain a healthy number of the 55-year-old’s previous hits, which include “Conga” and “The Rhythm is Going to Get You”. It is expected that Estefan’s collaboration with her husband, musician and producer Emilio Estefan, will also play a part in the musical.

The jukebox musical has proven a successful formula over the years, with artists ranging from ABBA to The Spice Girls to Queen to Blondie all having had their back catalog sampled in musicals of varying success.

While “We Will Rock You!” (Queen) and “Mamma Mia!” (ABBA) proved colossal hits, productions such as “Viva Forever” (The Spice Girls) have bombed spectacularly. The success of such productions often depends on the strength and depth of each artist’s back catalog.

Does Gloria Estefan possess a winning selection of hits? Her career to date suggests she doesn’t lack popularity: Along with seven Grammy Awards, Estefan has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. Emilio Estefan, for his part, has produced the likes of Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez.

In a statement released Monday, president of the Nederlander Organization Jimmy Nederlander said:

“The Estefans’ journey of success, led by raw talent and passion, is captivating as it drove them from relative obscurity to global sensations.”

Would you stump up the cash to see a Gloria Estefan musical on Broadway?
